Outboard Engines

Posted On 2008-10-08 , 11:12 AM

Winterizing your boat for the majority of us is the most dreaded day of the year. Warm weather is gone and so starts the wait for spring temperatures so we can hit the water again next season. Take these protective measures to assure your boat will greet you with a happy face when warm weather welcomes you again in a few months.

Tips For Winterizing Outboard Engine:

Change the lubricant in engine transmission or the outboard lower unit

Apply fogging if called for by manufacturer

Drain the boat's fuel tanks as much as possible

Fill the boat’s fuel tanks completely full

Add biocide and/or stabilizing agents to fuel

Change the fuel filters

Add antifreeze to the engine’s cooling system

Add distilled water to batteries, charge completely and disconnect

Charge batteries to capacity

  • Wash and wax your boat right after you take it from the water. By doing this, it will be much easier to clean up for use next season. Clean interior carpets and floors. Consider removing cushions, PFDs and other items that could mildew.
